The Great Hidden Shaman of Our Time
The Unveiling of a Key Figure Behind Climate Change, the Environmental Movement, and the Restoration of the Sacred Earth.
Way of Nature Founder, John P. Milton
In the early 1940’s he implored his parents to let him go alone into the wilderness for days at a time on a vision quest - at the age of seven. He would go on to lead thousands of seekers on vision quests in the next 70 years.
As a teenage activist, he spearheaded a movement to save the Great Swamp of New Jersey from being paved over for an airport. It is now a National Wildlife Refuge.
In the early 1960s, as a conservation scientist, he wrote one of the first papers to identify the coming threat of Climate Change.
In the mid-1960s, he was the first to explore the vast wilderness of the Brooks Range in the Arctic North, staving off oil development, saving the last great caribou herd on Earth, and preserving more than 100 million acres of wilderness to be returned to First Nations people - while spearheading the campaign to coin the term “Environmental Movement” to raise public awareness of the threat to Nature.
In 1968 in the middle of the Tet Offensive in Viet Nam, his work predicting environmental devastation earned him a death threat, forcing him to flee the country in a cargo plane.
In the 70s, he was one of the key consultants at the Nixon White House in the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency. On track to rise to a potential Cabinet appointment as Secretary of the Interior, he heeded a lifelong spiritual call and turned within, meditating for years with yogis in the Himalayas, becoming a high Tai Chi master, and returning from death by lightning with profound experience of the nature of human consciouness and our relationship to Source Awareness.
Settling at last in the pristine haven of Crestone, Colorado, he founded Way of Nature and the Sacred Land Sanctuary as the foundation of a path of inner healing and the “essentialization” of the sacred teachings of the world’s spiritual traditions for those seeking to realize their True Nature.
Now, in the midst of our profund global crisis, the Way of Nature teachings of John P. Milton offer a path of a transformative reconnection to Nature, with the vision of a restoration of our wonded planet - and our wounded consciousness - through the affirmation, preservation, and cherishing of the Sacred Earth.
A compelling biography and transformative documentary are now in development, to share with the world, at a crucial moment, one of the great untold stories of our time: equal parts Indiana Jones, Henry David Thoreau, and the Dalai Lama.
This brief video offers a glimpse of Milton’s extraordinary life, and of the potentially revolutionary impact of his legacy.
